Wogan House, originally known as Western House, has a rich history, serving as the home of the BBC Designs Department before later housing BBC Radio 2. Renamed in honour of Sir Terry Wogan, it reflects its deep-rooted connection to British media. Over the years, the building has evolved from a hub for broadcasting equipment design to a key site for transatlantic colour television satellite communications.

This refurbishment project honours that legacy while redefining the space for modern work environments. By blending contemporary design with historical elements, the transformation creates a functional yet inspiring workplace that meets the evolving needs of its users.

The refurbishment was guided by a vision that balances heritage with innovation. The design embraces a comforting and simple aesthetic, punctuated by vibrant colours and dynamic textures that pay homage to the building’s pioneering role in transatlantic colour television broadcasting.

The interior approach champions an inclusive and flexible working environment, allowing employees to seamlessly transition between focused tasks, collaborative projects, and quiet contemplation. The new design reflects the shifting dynamics of workplace culture while fostering a sense of community and creativity.

1. Supporting New Ways of Working

- A diverse range of workspaces, including hot-desking zones, meeting hubs, and private focus areas

- Thoughtful spatial planning to encourage interaction and teamwork while accommodating individual needs.

2. Promoting Wellbeing & Safety

- Biophilic design elements, including natural light, plant installations, and ergonomic furniture to enhance comfort and productivity

- Acoustic solutions to minimise noise distractions and create a tranquil atmosphere

- Enhanced air quality and sustainable materials for a healthier workspace environment.

3. Allowing for Future Flexibility

- Modular furniture and adaptable layouts to respond to future business needs

- Integrated smart technology to support hybrid working models

- The scheme is underpinned by three fundamental principles:

Materiality & Aesthetic Approach

The materials and finishes at Wogan House bridge its history and future. Inspired by early colour television, bold accents enliven a neutral backdrop, while varied textures—soft upholstery, industrial metals, and timber—add depth and character. Thoughtful lighting enhances the space, with warm ambient tones for collaboration and task lighting for focus.

Creating a Dynamic & Inviting Space

Beyond just a place of work, Wogan House has been designed to foster energy, creativity, and connection. The revitalised interiors encourage interaction, inspire innovation, and provide a welcoming atmosphere for both employees and visitors.

Through this transformation, Wogan House not only respects its rich broadcasting heritage but also repositions itself as a forward-thinking workplace—one that embraces change while remaining firmly rooted in its iconic past.
