Our brief was to look into ways of expanding the existing junior school and at the same time consolidating the smaller modular classrooms sited to the rear into a single new building.

From the master planning exercise carried out with the school we established that the existing site surrounded by a listed orchard was still the best location for the new building and that with careful demolition of some underused school buildings access could be improved and visually the project would positively enhance the school campus.

The existing 1980's building would be stripped back and then refurbished to bring thermal and acoustic levels up to a modern standard. The new extension would be constructed at the west end with the central spine corridor continuing into the new area linking the two together with new classrooms either side.

A covered play area is formed along the southern elevation allowing the children to continue their outside activities regardless of the weather.

Existing and new would be clad in similar brickwork to the original school buildings at ground floor with a rainscreen cladding to the upper floors with coloured accent panels.
