Silcoates Sixth Form Centre

The Silcoates school campus is situated in Wrenthorpe near Wakefield.

Garnett Netherwood were commissioned to look at extending the existing dining facilities and to design additional IT facilities for the sixth form.

At ground floor level, an extension was formed to the existing dining room, building around an existing open courtyard area.  The first floor, which extends back over the original dining room, housed additional sixth form facilities.

Externally, the choice of brick and window proportions were all informed by the existing building built in the 1930’s. Also the design had to work around an existing fire escape from some second floor classrooms.  Internally, there was more freedom in the design and we were able to open up the roof void over the IT room to create a double height space. A mezzanine floor/balcony has been inserted into the roof structure giving the pupils additional study and relaxation space.
